What's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

What's bjj? It is both a martial art and a combat sport that targets on grappling control in order for you to submit your foe.

Several of the moves were taken from judo and jiu-jitsu. Learning how to perform the proper technique allows even a smaller and weaker person to subdue someone that is stronger which is why it is also employed in self-defense classes.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu developed as early as in the early part of the century. It recently attained global notoriety after Royce Gracie was victorious at the UFC several times after it was established in 1993. Due to the domination, a variety of academies are now teaching this art.

An individual can probably say that its significance as a sport is second after football.  There are competitions held often such as the European Championships, the Mundials and the Pan Am Games

If you desire to be successful in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, repetition is key and the sole way you can do that is through training and rolling. This means fighting against a live and resisting opponent under real conditions while at the same time being careful not to cause any serious injury.

During sparring and competition, grapplers are required to don the gi. It looks very similar to what you would wear when you train judo. The only difference is that the outfit has tighter cuffs on both the jacket and pants.

Submissions in Brazilian jiu-jitsu are performed either through chokes or joint locks. Choking as you well know involves constricting the windpipe so the person is unable to breathe. Aside from that, there's also what is known as strangling which cuts off the carotid artery. A choke is less efficient than a strangle and can cause permanent damage or even death which is why the latter is used more often during competition.

As for joint locks which are probably more safe, what you are doing is creating a lever with the body position which forces the joint to move past its normal range of motion. This is otherwise known as hyperextension and since there's no way out of it, the enemy has no other option but to submit.

Everybody can learn jiu-jitsu. As you get better, you get promoted to the next belt level. Noobs start with the white and move their way to the red belt. For those who are under 15 years old, you work your way from white to green belt.

How quickly you advance depends on the amount of time the person puts in and how rapidly they learn. To reach the elite class for example, it takes at least ten years or even more.

With BJJ making its mark in the world scene, you will not have a difficult time locating a gymnasium that's offering classes. The only thing you have to do now is manage your time properly since this is done in a group and you are just one of many that are learning the ropes of this art. As a beginner, you don’t have to get a uniform so just come in wearing a shirt and shorts.  If you are trying to find a bjj blog that doesn't take it too seriously, you should check out doyoubjj.com.
